- 6 to 8 cups sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Combine the sliced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour in a large bowl. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
- Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan.
- Fill the crust with the apple mixture and dot with butter.
- Prepare a second crust to cover the pie, ensuring to cut slits for steam to escape.
- If desired, brush the top crust with a beaten egg.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 30 to 35 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is golden.
- Allow to cool before serving.
Notes
For a twist, try caramel sauce, a crisp topping, or mix in chopped nuts with the apple filling.
